Dandy Krazy, one of Zambia’s most beloved musicians, has died at 47 following a road accident in Kapiri Mposhi on New Year’s Eve.
The artist, whose real name was Wesley Chibambo, was involved in a collision between his car, a truck, and another vehicle. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Dandy Krazy succumbed to his injuries early Thursday at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, where he was rushed for emergency treatment.
The President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, hailed the late musician as an “extraordinary artist” whose music united people across Zambia.
“His music and charisma touched lives far and wide, crossing all boundaries and bringing people together,” President Hichilema wrote on Facebook.
Dandy Krazy was celebrated for his socially conscious music, including the 2011 hit Donchi Kubeba, pivotal in the Patriotic Front’s historic election victory. The song criticised inequality and inspired change, earning him national recognition, including the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of Freedom from former President Michael Sata.
Known for other hits like Chintelelwe and collaborations on tracks such as Chipuba Chandi, Dandy Krazy left a lasting mark on Zambia’s music scene.
President Hichilema also acknowledged The four others who died in the car crash.
“We also remember the four others who perished in the tragic accident and stand in solidarity with their families during this moment of grief.” BBC reported that the government has pledged to assist with funeral expenses for all crash victims.
