X Updates Block Feature, Allows Blocked Accounts to View Public Posts

1.2k

X, formerly Twitter, has updated its block feature to let blocked accounts see public posts. An app researcher, Nima Owji, recently discovered this change, and Elon Musk confirmed it on Monday.

Responding to Owji’s post, Musk stated: “High time this happened. The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, public post.”

Previously, blocked users encountered a “You’re blocked” message when trying to access the profiles of those who had blocked them. With the new change, blocked users can now access all public content from those accounts. Engagement is still restricted, however.

Twitter reportedly made a similar change some years ago but quickly reversed it after facing user backlash. This time, the change retains some limitations on blocked accounts, but many users expressed concerns that blocked individuals can still view their content. Some users also raised questions about user safety and the effectiveness of the block feature in preventing unwanted attention  or harassment on the platform.
