‘Undemocratic’ Macron Rejects Left-wing PM, While Seeking Democracy In Niger

527

President Emmanuel Macron of France has rejected the left-wing party’s right to form a government after his party’s defeat in the July election. This deepens the post-election political crisis in the imperialist country.

This unprecedented decision contradicts Western democratic values. Manuel Bompard, coordinator of the hard-left LFI, described Macron’s decision as an “unacceptable anti-democratic coup”.

Recall that in the July 7 snap election, the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) alliance won the majority (190 seats) of the 577 seats in the National Assembly, leaving Macron’s centrist alliance with 160 seats and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally with 140 seats. NFP’s victory was not enough to form a government alone, but it is qualified to pick a new prime minister for a government that includes other parties.

Macron has constantly rejected the NFP’s claim to form a new government, allowing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to continue in a caretaker capacity. The caretaker government has led the French government since July 17.

Justifying his refusal to allow the left wing pick a new Prime Minister, Macron said on Monday that a left-wing government “would be immediately censored by all the other groups represented in the National Assembly”.

My responsibility is that the country is not blocked nor weakened. The institutional stability of our country, therefore, requires us not to choose this option, he added.

The hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) has called for the impeachment of President Macron over his “anti-democratic” actions, while Communist leader Fabien Roussel called for protests.

While he perpetuates what French opposition parties describe as an “anti-democratic coup” in France, Macron is championing democracy in Niger. He rejected the Nigerien military government and initially refused to withdraw French troops from the West African country.

France is also allegedly spying on Niger and injecting counterfeit CFA franc notes into circulation in Mali. These attempts to destabilise its rebellious former colonies are allegedly conducted by France’s foreign intelligence agency, the Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE).
