Uganda’s Bobi Wine To Run For President In 2026

Uganda’s young opposition politician, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has declared his intention to contest in the presidential election coming up in 2026.

The 42-year-old came second in the controversial 2021 election with 35 per cent of the vote behind President Yoweri Museveni, who scored 58 per cent.

Bobi Wine and his National Unity Platform party (NUP) are popular among the youths, who have held protests against Museveni’s oppressive rule.

Museveni, President since 1986, is the fourth longest-serving President in Africa.

Earlier this month, he was hospitalised after being hit by a teargas canister during a protest against bad governance.

In an interview with Uganda’s Monitor newspaper published on Sunday, Bobi Wine said he would run again in 2026, expressing his determination to unseat Museveni.

He said, “A whole generation of citizens is hungry and angry and yearning for change.”
