A yet-to-be-identified police officer allegedly shot a driver dead at Agip Junction along Ada George Road in Port Harcourt on Thursday evening, and the deceased’s vehicle lost control and crashed into three bystanders, injuring them. The incident occurred at about 5pm after the deceased, who was driving a vehicle, allegedly failed to stop when he was flagged down by police officers stationed around the junction. An eyewitness told journalists that one of the officers opened fire on the vehicle after the driver refused to stop. The eyewitness said the bullet hit the driver in the chest, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and hit three other people. He said the police officer fired three bullets. “The police officers close to Agip/Ada George Junction stopped a man who was driving, but he refused to stop. So, the policeman shot him from behind, and the bullet pierced his chest. He died. The vehicle lost control and hit three other people. The man died at a hospital close to the junction. I don’t know why a policeman would fire a gun at a citizen who was not armed,” the eyewitness said.

After shooting the driver, the officer reportedly started firing sporadically in an attempt to escape. Some youths rushed at him, collected his gun and started beating him. Other police officers later arrived and rescued him. The incident caused tension in the area. The father of the young man who was killed has denied reports describing his son as a fraudster, popularly known as a “Yahoo Boy”, describing him as a responsible young man. When contacted for confirmation, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, ASP Blessing Agabe, promised to revert but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report. The identity of the deceased, the condition of the three injured persons, and the actions of the police officer involved remain unclear pending an official statement from the Rivers State Police Command.
