Togo and Burkina Faso are set to sign a bilateral free-roaming agreement to lower communication costs for travellers between the two nations.

Dr Pasteur Poda, Chairman of Burkina Faso’s Regulatory Council for the Authority of Regulation for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP), announced this initiative following a visit by a delegation to Lomé.

During the visit, discussions centred on digital transformation, focusing on Togo’s expertise in data-driven regulation. The Burkinabè delegation toured ARCEP Togo’s supervision centre, which monitors real-time service quality. Both regulatory authorities plan to formalise their collaboration through a partnership agreement in the coming weeks.

Togo has previously established free-roaming agreements with Benin, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Mali, allowing travellers to communicate at reduced costs without changing SIM cards.

For instance, the agreement with Benin, signed in October 2023, enables Togolese travellers to benefit from local rates in Benin for 30 days, with free incoming calls.

Similarly, the deal with Ghana, signed in November 2023, offers free call reception for the first 30 consecutive days for travellers between the two countries.

These initiatives align with the broader objectives to promote seamless communication across West African states, thus enhancing regional integration and economic activities.
