Tinubu Appoints Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Opponent of EndBadGovernance Protests as Minister of Womens Affairs

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, an opponent of the #EndBadGovernance protests, as the Minister of Women’s Affairs in a recent cabinet reshuffle.

As disclosed on Wednesday, October 23, in a statement of Restructuring of Ministries Ministerial Portfolios, Sulaiman-Ibrahim will replace Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye as Minister of Women Affairs.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim, however, was the Minister of State for Police Affairs, during which she opposed the demonstrations of protesters who sought to #EndBadGovernance in Nigeria.

On July 27 2024, prior to the August protests, borne out of public demands for good governance from Tinubu’s economic policies, Suleiman-Ibrahim told Nigerian youths to shun the demonstrations.

The former director-general of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) acknowledged the frustrations driving the need for nationwide protests. Still, it warned the protesters to shun the demonstrations.

Suleiman-Ibrahim’s argument, as published in Daily Trust, was the narratives surrounding the protest and its “faceless” nature resembling one that “often” leads to chaos.

Protests can easily be hijacked by criminal elements, leading to unintended consequences, causing harm to people and property, and creating divisions that are difficult to heal, she warned in a press release.

Despite her unpopular stance against peaceful protests, Sulaiman-Ibrahim has been appointed to replace Uju Kennedy, who was sacked on corruption allegations.

By opposing the protests, Sulaiman-Ibrahim indulged Nigerians in ignoring their fundamental human rights to freedom and the right to protest as guaranteed under Sections 38, 39, 40, and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

President Tinubu has since charged her and six other appointed ministers to see their appointment as a call to serve their nation.
