Tinubu Appoints Spokesperson, Ngelale, As Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action

Sources within the presidency claimed that Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, was sacked by the president before he announced his resignation to the public citing family health issues.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr Ajuri Ngelale, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, as Nigeria’s Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action.

He also established a 25-person committee to oversee the country’s green economic initiatives.

The Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, from the office of the secretary to the government of the federation, revealed this on Sunday in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu establishes a committee to oversee green economic initiatives, appoints Chief Ajuri Ngelale as special envoy on climate action.’

“Ngelale will serve in this role as part of a larger Presidential Committee, to be chaired by the President,” the statement read, adding that Ngelale will retain his role as the Official Spokesperson of the President and Special Adviser on Media & Publicity while serving on the committee.

The statement explained that the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions will coordinate and oversee all policies and programmes on climate action and green economic development.

The new committee, chaired by the President, includes the Minister of Environment, Mr Balarabe Lawal, as Vice-Chairman and Mr Ajuri Ngelale as Secretary/Special Presidential Envoy.

Committee members include the CEOs of InfraCorp, Mr Lazarus Angbazo; National Council on Climate Change, Mr Salisu Dahiru; Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Mr Michael Ohiani; Nigeria Investment Promotion Council, Mrs Aisha Rimi; and National Social Investment Fund, Mr Aminu Umar-Sadiq.

It also includes the CEOs of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall, Mr Yusuf Maina-Bukar; the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mr Abdullahi Mustapha; Rural Electrification Agency, Mr Abba Aliyu; CreditCorp, Mr Uzoma Nwagba; National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, Mr Khalil Halilu; Solid Minerals Development Fund, Mrs Fatima Shinkafi; CBN Deputy Governor, Mr Bala Bello; UN SE4ALL, Mrs Lolade Abiola; and an Adviser to the NCCC, Mrs Teni Majekodunmi.

Representatives from the Federal Ministries of FCT, Finance, Industry, Trade & Investment, Water Resources, and Agriculture & Food Security were also included.

According to the statement, their tasks include coordinating federal institutions’ activities to achieve climate action and green economic objectives, collaborating with various government and non-government entities, monitoring climate action and renewable energy projects, tracking the Energy Transition Working Group’s initiatives, supervising the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen, and preparing bi-annual updates on green ambitions.
