The National Electricity Grid Has Suffered Another Collapse, Plunging The Country Into Darkness

This latest outage, which occurred on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 1:33 p.m., marks the highest number of grid failures recorded in a year.

According to a press release by JEDC, the power outage has affected all feeders under its franchise due to the loss of supply from the national grid.

Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, the Head of Corporate Communications for JEDC, assured customers that efforts are underway to restore power once grid operations return to normalcy.

This collapse adds to growing concerns over the stability of Nigeria’s national grid, which has faced persistent challenges throughout the year.

The collapse comes after last occurred on November 7th, marking the twelfth failure in 2024.

West Africa Weekly reported an electricity crisis looms as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) directed gas producers to halt supplies to indebted generation companies (GenCos).
