Sylvester Oromoni Jnr. buried in Warri today after two years

12 year-old Sylvester Oromoni Jnr. who died on November 30, 2021 after being tortured by senior students in Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, has been buried in his family compound in Ogbe-Ijoh, Warri, Delta State. The burial took place today with family, friends and many sympathisers present.

The family announced their decision on Monday to bid their son farewell finally, after 2 years trying unsuccessfully to get justice for their son.

The family stated that two years after their son’s demise, they are yet to get justice over the matter. They described the young Sylvester as an exceptional young boy who was mature beyond his age with an extraordinary sense of humour. The statement read in part:

“Exactly two years ago, precisely on November 30, 2021, the death of our 12-year-old son, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, a pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, was announced in controversial circumstances, after he was tortured to death by some senior students who wanted to initiate him into a cult group and till date we as a family is yet to get justice in the matter.

“Before his untimely demise, Sylvester was renowned for his exceptional intellect and maturity beyond his years. A young mind brimming with potential, he demonstrated remarkable initiative and an extraordinary sense of humour, endearing him to those fortunate to cross paths with him. Sylvester’s insatiable passion for knowledge, particularly in computer science, programming, electrical science, and his special interest in football set him apart.”

According to them, his absence created an irreplaceable void in their lives. They called on family and friends to reflect on the beautiful side of the young boy.

The late Sylvester’s death sparked protests all over the country which led to the closure of the school by the Lagos State government while women and civil society groups demand justice over the issue. The case is still under investigation.
