Peter Obi, 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party has criticised the recent directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) restricting the distribution of palliatives to the less privileged.

In a post on X, Obi described the directive as “disturbing” and cautioned that it risks discouraging acts of goodwill during a time of widespread economic hardship.

While acknowledging that the directive is a response to recent tragedies across the country and an effort to address public safety concerns, Obi expressed concern that it could be abused.

He emphasised that the restrictions could deter citizens from helping those in desperate need of support.

This is not the time to stifle the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people,” Obi stated. “Instead, let us channel these efforts constructively, ensuring that help reaches the most vulnerable safely and efficiently.”

Obi called on the government to focus on promoting coordination rather than imposing barriers that hinder much-needed acts of kindness.

He urged the IGP to immediately review the directive, stressing that the police should foster collaboration and support, rather than division and discouragement, in addressing the suffering of Nigerians.

He also highlighted the need for the government to tackle the root causes of the prevailing hardship. He criticised what he described as “insensitive policies” and called for lasting solutions to alleviate the economic pain felt by many citizens.

Obi urged the authorities to encourage better organisation in the distribution of aid while ensuring public safety, rather than creating unnecessary bureaucracy that hinders the delivery of relief to those in need.

In a similar directive, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called on individuals and groups intending to distribute items to large gatherings in the state to obtain clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission.

To prevent such occurrences in Lagos State, I urge all individuals or groups intending to distribute items to large gatherings to seek clearance from the Lagos State Safety Commission,” he wrote on X.

He continued, “You can register your events and obtain the necessary clearance through the Safety Commission’s platform.”
