Slovakia’s Prime Minister, Robert Fico, remains in serious condition after an assassination attempt on Wednesday, but his condition has stabilised, officials said on Saturday.
Fico, 59, was shot five times at close range in an attack that has caused shock across Europe and raised concerns about political tensions in Slovakia.
We have not won yet; that is important to say,” Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kaliniak said while giving an update outside F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital in Banka Bystrica town, where Fico is being treated.
The Slovak Specialised Criminal Court has ruled that the suspect, identified as Juraj C., will stay in custody after being charged with attempted murder.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok stated that the suspect acted alone and had previously participated in anti-government protests.
Moreover, Kaliniak — the deputy prime minister — noted that there was no need to formally take over Fico’s duties as some communication with the prime minister was still possible.
On Friday, Fico underwent a two-hour surgery, which has improved his chances of recovery. “We are succeeding in gradually nearing a positive prognosis,” Kaliniak said.
However, Fico still faces significant risks.
The body’s reaction to a shooting wound is always severe and brings (the risk of) several complications, which lasts for 4-5 days, which is today and tomorrow, Kaliniak explained.
Local media reported that the suspect is a 71-year-old former security guard and poet. The court ruled he would remain in custody due to the risk of escape or further criminal activity, and this decision is subject to appeal.
