Senegal has parted company with head coach Aliou Cissé, the winner of their historic 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and guided them through two consecutive World Cup tournaments.

According to reports, the decision was made by Senegal’s sports minister, Khady Diène Gaye, with the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) citing a government request not to renew Cissé’s contract.

Cissé, 48, who captained the national team during his playing days and had a stint at Paris Saint-Germain, took over as head coach in 2015 and won Senegal’s first-ever AFCON title in 2022 and a strong show in the 2022 World Cup, where they reached the last 16.

Cissé’s departure comes even as the team remains unbeaten in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The FSF announced that an interim coaching team would take charge of Senegal’s two upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi this month.

Senegal is currently tied with Burkina Faso at four points in their qualifying group, which also includes Burundi.
