Russian strikes across Ukraine have killed 24 people and caused significant damage to a children’s hospital in Kyiv. In a daytime attack on the capital, at least 10 people were killed, and the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital sustained significant damage. Footage from Al Jazeera showed extensive destruction. Kyiv’s mayor also confirmed casualties at the hospital.

In Kryvyi Rih, the head of the military administration reported 10 deaths, with additional fatalities in Pokrovsk and Dnipro. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, currently in Poland, condemned the attacks on civilians and stressed the need for Russia to face consequences.

The strikes damaged residential buildings, infrastructure, and the hospital, where cancer and intensive care wards were hit. Photos showed young children being evacuated. Kyiv’s mayor called the bombardment one of the worst attacks on the capital since the war began.

Meanwhile, in Kryvyi Rih, 31 people were injured, with 10 in serious condition. The city, Zelensky’s hometown, has been frequently targeted since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Additional casualties were reported in Dnipro and Pokrovsk, where high-rise buildings and businesses were hit.

While Russia has not commented on the recent strikes, it maintains that its military does not target civilian infrastructure. The UN’s human rights mission in Ukraine, on the other hand, reported increasing civilian casualties, noting that May was the deadliest month for civilians in nearly a year.
