Reps Task IGP, NYSC DG To Find Corps Member Missing Since May

Should NYSC be Scrapped Amid Insecurities

The House of Representatives has charged the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ahmed Yushau and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to rescue a corps member, Emeka Okeke who has been missing since May 2024.

Okeke, a graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, posted to Akure, Ondo State for the youth service scheme, reportedly disappeared in May and has not been seen since then.

At the green chamber’s plenary on Thursday, a motion of urgent public importance was moved by Nnolim Nnaji calling for the Police and the Management of NYSC to find Okeke.

Nnaji narrated the efforts of the parents of the missing graduate to locate their son, with little or no assistance from security agents.

The lawmaker lamented that participants of the national youth service are often subjected to attacks in their places of primary assignment, while noting that the scheme does not provide decent accommodation for them.

Following the presentation of the motion, the House resolved that President Bola Tinubu should direct the NYSC Director General and the IGP to provide security and decent accommodation to corps members.

In its resolution, the House called for a coordinated search and rescue mission to locate the missing corps member.

There have been debates over the continuation of the NYSC scheme with some commentators calling for it to be scrapped, citing insecurity among other factors.
