Reactions as Malian National Transition Council Member Detained in Côte d’Ivoire Amid Diplomatic Tension

606

The arrest of Mamadou Hawa Gassama, a prominent member of Mali’s National Transitional Council (CNT), by Ivorian authorities has sparked a new wave of diplomatic tension between Mali and Côte d’Ivoire.

Mr. Gassama was reportedly detained in the city of Séguéla, Côte d’Ivoire, where he had travelled to attend a funeral. Credible sources confirm that he is currently in custody and awaiting a court appearance.

The arrest, according to AESInfo, is reportedly linked to remarks he allegedly made on social media, which Ivorian authorities have deemed problematic. Though official charges have not yet been fully disclosed, the move has already stirred unease in Bamako.

Observers fear the incident could strain the already fragile relationship between the two West African countries. In Mali, the arrest of Mr. Gassama is being viewed by some as a provocative act.

This development comes against the backdrop of lingering distrust, notably following the 2022 diplomatic standoff over 49 Ivorian soldiers who were arrested and held in Mali. Though eventually resolved, that crisis left scars in bilateral ties and heightened political sensitivities.
