Price Of Eggs To Hit N10,000 As Poultry Farmers Blame Fuel Costs And Lack Of Government Support

201

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has raised alarms over a potential increase in egg prices, with a crate potentially reaching N10,000 from N5,000 and N6,000 due to rising production costs.

Speaking in Abuja at an event to mark World Egg Day, PAN FCT Secretary Musa Hakeem attributed the looming price hike to surging transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies and escalating feed prices.

Hakeem urged the government to declare a state of emergency in the egg production sector, warning that without urgent intervention, the already declining protein consumption in the country would worsen.

Despite the current market price of N5,500 to N6,000 per crate, Hakeem said farmers are struggling to keep prices down for consumers. He criticised the lack of government assistance, noting that poultry farmers had not received grain support in three years.

Meanwhile, agro-dealer, Jude Arikogu highlighted issues with feed quality and underweight bags, exacerbating the struggles faced by farmers.

Nigerians are currently grappling with increase in prices of other staple foods, as price of fuel has also increased across the 36 states of Nigeria, it stood at N998/per litre in Lagos and N1,000 in Abuja as of Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
