The Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos State gubernatorial candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has faulted the Lagos State government’s ban on disposable single-use plastic and Styrofoam.
In a press statement issued in the early hours of Monday, titled: “Plastic Ban: Hasty Impulsive Decisions Are No Substitute For Critical Policy Making,” Rhodes-Vivour acknowledged the need to curtail waste or disposable products as a means to prevent environmental hazards.
However, he criticized the Lagos State government for its hasty decisions without proffering alternative means to curb public health hazards caused by consumers littering the environment with Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.
Writing on his Twitter handle, Rhodes-Vivour said:
“Did the government care to think about what would happen to the thousands of retailers and small business owners, from Idumota to Oshodi and Ojota, whose livelihoods are tied to this product? Did it think about the potential loss of jobs and the utter devastation it would bring to manufacturers?”
