As Nigeria reels from a fresh wave of violent attacks across multiple states, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former presidential candidate Peter Obi have issued statements condemning the worsening insecurity and calling on the government of President Bola Tinubu to take urgent, decisive action.
In separate but aligned messages, the two opposition leaders expressed outrage at the mounting death toll from coordinated attacks and explosions that left over 50 Nigerians dead in just 24 hours. Fatal incidents were reported in Kano, where a bomb blast killed five people; in Plateau, where 12 wedding guests were murdered; in Kebbi, where 30 were massacred in a bandit rampage; in Borno, where a female suicide bomber killed 24; and in Katsina, where a police inspector was shot dead.
Obi decried the daily bloodletting in the country, calling it a reflection of failed leadership and national neglect.
We must begin to treat insecurity as a national priority, he said, adding, An administration that continuously allows insecurity and other vices to thrive is doing a grave disservice to the nation.
He lamented the lack of empathy from Nigerian authorities in the face of the country’s mounting human toll:
But while the country bleeds daily, the relevant authorities must respond adequately.
Atiku echoed the sense of national grief and urgency.
The heartbreaking reports from Borno, Plateau, Kano, and Kebbi… are a devastating blow to our collective conscience as a nation, he stated, urging that Nigeria urgently needs a decisive, people-centred approach to security, one that prioritises human life above all else.
Both leaders stressed that the country is spiralling into chaos while leadership remains unaccountable. They called for bold, people-focused reforms, practical intelligence, and swift justice to end what many have described as a slow-motion collapse of national security.
As outrage mounts and citizens demand change, Obi concluded his remarks with a rallying call:
We must act now to save our country. Nigerians deserve to live. A new Nigeria is POssible.
