Niger’s Tiani Accuses France of Plotting Attack on Niamey Military Base

9

Niger’s head of state, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has renewed his accusations against France, claiming that French authorities were behind an attack targeting the military base at Niamey’s airport. He described the alleged operation as part of a broader effort to destabilise his government.

In an interview on February 13, Tiani said French intelligence services, with what he called the backing of President Emmanuel Macron and some West African allies, were involved in recent attacks against Niger. According to him, the objective was to weaken his administration and reverse the country’s current political direction.

Tiani framed the alleged actions as part of what he described as a neocolonial war against Niger. He said the attacks were intended to create instability and possibly pave the way for a change in leadership.

The accusations come at a time of strained relations between Niamey and Paris. Diplomatic ties between the two countries have deteriorated since the military took power in Niger, leading to the withdrawal of French troops and the suspension of several forms of cooperation.

Despite the seriousness of the claims, no independent evidence has been presented to confirm the French government’s direct involvement. French authorities have not publicly responded to the latest accusations.

The situation reflects the deepening political and diplomatic tensions between Niger and its former colonial power, as the country continues to redefine its international alliances and security partnerships.
