Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has clinched the silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday.
The 28-year-old, who set the world record of 12.12 seconds in 2022, ran a blistering 12.29s in a fiercely competitive race but had to settle for second place behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji. The Swiss star powered to gold with a national record of 12.24s.
The United States’ Grace Stark claimed bronze in 12.34s, while compatriot Masai Russell narrowly missed the podium with 12.44s.
It will be recalled that Amusan was the first Nigerian and the first African to win the world 100m hurdles title in Oregon two years ago, and was aiming to reclaim her crown.
Although she fell just short of gold, the silver medal adds to her glittering résumé, which already includes multiple Diamond League triumphs, a Commonwealth Games title, and the world record.
Her performance in Tokyo is a strong response, especially after she failed to reach the finals at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
