Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff Taoreed Lagbaja Passes Away at 56

43

The Presidency has announced the death of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos following a period of illness.

According to a state press release by Bayo Onanuga, SSA, to the President of Information and Strategy.

Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu.

His military career began at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992—a U.S. Army War College graduate with a Master’s in Strategic Studies.

Recall Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede was appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff during Lagbaja’s medical leave amid reports regarding Lagbaja’s health, with some unsubstantiated reports even alleging his death.

A statement from Jackson Ude, a former presidential aide, claimed that Lagbaja had passed away from stage three cancer, prompting a solid rebuttal from army officials on October 20.
