The newly updated petrol price by MRS Oil Nigeria Plc has sparked reactions from Nigerians, particularly over the price disparities across different regions. According to the price list shared by MRS on X, petrol now sells at ₦925 per litre in Lagos, ₦935 in the South-West, ₦945 in the North, and ₦955 in the East.
The announcement has led to criticism, with many questioning why the Eastern region—home to several oil-producing states—was being charged the highest price per litre, even higher than the North, which is farther from major fuel supply points like Lagos.
Nigerians took to X to express their displeasure, calling on MRS to clarify the pricing formula.
@macshaw718, asked:
“Why is the price in the East more expensive than others, even when the resource is from there?”
@Ancientman_, challenged the reasoning behind the pricing structure, stating:
“If MRS is lifting petrol from Dangote Refinery in Lagos and considering distance as the factor for price differentiation, the North should be the costliest and not the East, right?”
In the same vein, another user: @EsonwunneL called on MRS to explain the rationale behind the price differences, ”Attention Mr. MRS, we wish to know and understand the economic and mathematical model behind these prices accordingly. That Eastern Nigeria will pay a higher price for PMS than Northern Nigeria is convoluted and defies logic.“
This varying price list has reignited discussions on the historical issue of petroleum pricing and regional inequalities in Nigeria. Despite being an oil-rich region, states in the South-South and South-East have often faced higher fuel prices due to factors such as transportation costs, logistics, and alleged supply manipulation.
Some critics argue that if distance was the primary factor in determining prices, then the North should naturally have the highest price due to its location farther away from the major refineries and ports.
Despite this critisism, MRS Oil is yet to explain the reason for the varying price structure. Meanwhile, the company assured Nigerians in its original post that they can report any station selling petrol above the listed prices via a dedicated whistleblowing phone line and email.
