Thousands of Nigerians have taken to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to alert the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu about the increasing pothole crisis on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
As seen on X in the early hours of Monday, many of the posts indicated the dire condition of the Lekki-Epe route of the Eti-Osa Local Government Area.
At exactly 9:18 AM (WAT), the Nigerian Actor, Comedian, and Human Rights Activist Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, initiated the conversation, criticising Governor Sanwo-Olu to prioritise driving through the streets of Lagos to see the deplorable state of the highway over the task of visiting Nnamdi Azikwe, an International airport in Abuja to welcome President Bola Tinubu.
Hello Mr Governor @jidesanwoolu, one of these days when you are not too busy with the very serious task of going to the Airport in Abuja to welcome Mr President from an International trip, kindly take a drive around Lagos roads and let us know why the government continues to risk the lives of Lagosians, the post reads partly.
There are potholes on the roads, causing accidents that are capable of destroying lives and properties. Do better? he added to the post, which had more than half a million viewers at press time.
In response to the post, an immigration consultant with the user ID @Allezamani wrote, “Lekki-Epe expressway has turned into death traps, with so many potholes.”
Similarly, @SirLeoBDasilva wrote, “The state of Lagos roads [is] very shameful stuff. Totally deplorable. It’s almost like Lagos is at war, and roads are being destroyed by bombs.”
Given the public’s alertness to the potholes, a West Africa Weekly reporter residing in Lagos confirmed several potholes with centimetres wide along the Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Chevron, Jakande, and Ajah axis, causing not only traffic congestion but also pose a life-threatening risk to motorists.
Meanwhile, Eti-Osa LGA received ₦1.25 billion from Lagos State’s ₦26.6 billion statutory allocation from the Federal Government in July.
