Nigerian troops have successfully repelled an attempted attack by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists on the Naval Base at Fish Dam, located in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Army disclosed the incident in a statement posted on its official X handle, revealing that the terrorists launched the assault around 2 a.m. in an attempt to sabotage newly acquired swamp boats purchased by the Borno State Government to enhance waterway clearance operations in the Lake Chad region.

According to the Army, personnel at the base mounted a fierce resistance, engaging the terrorists in a gun battle that lasted over two hours. Reinforcements from nearby Baga arrived to support the base, ultimately forcing the attackers to retreat.

“In a well-coordinated joint land, maritime and air operations, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised scores of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists that attempted to infiltrate the Naval Base Lake Chad in Fish Dam during the early hours of today,” the statement noted.

Sources confirmed that an ambulance and two other vehicles were destroyed during the firefight, and several personnel sustained injuries. However, the terrorists failed to gain access to the targeted equipment.

“The terrorists commenced their infiltration attack at about 2 a.m. to destroy the newly acquired Swamp Boggeys by the Borno State Government for waterways clearance in the Lake Chad but was fiercely resisted by personnel of the Naval Base Lake Chad with reinforcement from Baga in a firefight that lasted for over 2 hours before the terrorists retreated having failed to gain access to the Swamp Boggeys while scores were neutralised and IED materials recovered”

The Army further stated that the Air Component Command (ACC) is currently conducting follow-on pursuit and exploitation operations along the Lake Chad waterways to track and neutralise the fleeing militants.

Minimal incursion was made, leading to the destruction of an ambulance and two other vehicles, while some personnel were wounded in action. The air component platforms are currently conducting follow-on pursuit exploitation on the waterways to decimate the terrorists further, the statement added.
