Nigerian Security Operatives Teargas Benue Protesters Despite President Tinubu’s Presence in Makurdi for “Condolence Visit”

Nigerian security operatives have again deployed teargas to disperse protesters in Benue State, who are demanding an end to the incessant killings in their communities.

The protest coincided with President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the state, further heightening tensions. Videos seen online show protesters chanting “No APC Flags!” and, in other video clips, tearing down banners and flags belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It will be recalled that a protest, which began peacefully in the early hours of Sunday at the Wurukum Roundabout, with youths dressed in black attire carrying placards, palm fronds, and banners with inscriptions such as “Enough of the Bloodshed,” “Benue Lives Matter,” and “Stop the Genocide” also turned chaotic when security forces moved in.

According to live videos circulating on social media platforms, including TikTok and X, officers were seen firing teargas into the crowd, unleashing hot water jets, and shooting live rounds into the air to disperse the demonstrators. Protesters were forced to flee in different directions as the chaos broke out.
