Following the recent riot in the United Kingdom caused by the killing of three young girls at a concert, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday issued a travel alert to citizens planning to visit the U.K.

In a press release signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Eche Abu-Obe, the foreign affairs ministry advised Nigerians to avoid political processions, protests, rallies or marches in the U.K. due to the recent development.

“Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings,” the statement said. “Be vigilant and self-aware at all times. Contact the High Commission to pass information that could be of interest via e-mail and telephone at [email protected], +442078391244.”

The statement further gave background of the situation, saying that demonstrations by the far right and other extra-parliamentary groups in part of the U.K. in recent times “have been significant, and in some instances unruly.

“These disturbances have only been aggravated by the unfortunate deaths of the three girls, and it has spawned an anti-immigration narrative, with particular emphasis on Muslim immigrants or persons of colour being targeted. This advisory remains under review,” it added.
