The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has seized counterfeit currencies valued at over N129 billion in Kano State and arrested three suspects connected to the illicit operation.

Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, disclosed in a statement on Tuesday that the operation, carried out on December 8, 2024, at Gwale in Kano State, resulted in the recovery of fake currencies, including US dollars, CFA francs, and Nigerian naira.

Recently, in Kano, the police successfully recovered the sum of N129,542,823,000 in counterfeit currencies, with a breakdown of 3,366,000 in counterfeit US dollars, 51,970 in counterfeit CFA franc, and 1,443,000 in counterfeit naira, Adejobi said.

The arrests followed intelligence that led to the apprehension of Nura Ibrahim, who was found to possess N392,000 in counterfeit naira, $7,800 in fake US dollars, and five ATM cards. Further investigations led to the arrest of his alleged accomplices, Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi.

The police spokesperson emphasised the significance of the operation in combating financial crimes in Nigeria and urged the public to remain vigilant. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigations.

Recall the Police Force that denounced an allegation of a smuggling scandal against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement, the force noted that the IG was not shielding a cartel accused of smuggling suspicious new banknotes from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The NPF categorically refutes these claims, condemning them as baseless and orchestrated attempts to tarnish the IGP’s reputation and the integrity of the Force, Adejobi said.
