Panic gripped passengers on Tuesday morning when a passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed, leaving several cabin overturned along the popular corridor. The incident occurred shortly after the train departed the nation’s capital around 11 a.m., triggering chaos as terrified commuters scrambled to safety.
Although no fatalities have been officially confirmed as of press time, the fate of all passengers remains uncertain. Rescue teams have since mobilised to the site of the accident.
Took my friend to the airport today, he landed in Abuja, boarded a train to Kaduna and this happened. My phobia for Nigerian trains keep increasing, an X user posted.

Speaking to PUNCH, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the derailment, noting that emergency efforts were underway.
I don’t want to say much for now, but the incident is confirmed and the rescue operation is on as we speak, he said.
The exact cause of the derailment remains unknown. However, authorities have assured that investigations will be launched to determine what led to the incident.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line is one of Nigeria’s busiest train routes, serving hundreds of daily commuters. It has previously faced disruptions, most notably the March 2022 terrorist attack, which claimed several lives and led to mass abductions.
