The Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ) has directed its members nationwide to temporarily remove all songs by Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy from their playlists, following a physical altercation between the singer and popular disc jockey DJ Tunez at a Lagos nightclub.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening at Obi’s House, a weekly Afrobeats event in Lagos, where DJ Tunez, whose real name is Michael Babatunde Adeyinka, was assaulted. Eyewitness accounts and viral videos circulating on social media show that the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, with Burna Boy and members of his entourage allegedly attacking the DJ. Reports indicate that DJ Tunez was assaulted for playing songs by Wizkid, Burna Boy’s long-time rival, instead of Burna Boy’s music.
In an official statement posted on Instagram, the NDJ expressed full solidarity with DJ Tunez and condemned the act of hostility within the entertainment industry. “Burna Boy’s music is temporarily out of any of our DJs’ playlists till further notice,” the statement read. “Our team will carry out a proper investigation into the incident that happened to one of our own, DJ Tunez,” it added. The association urged DJs across Nigeria to remain vigilant, professional, and respectful when dealing with artists, regardless of their status.
The NDJ also released a longer statement, stressing that discrimination and intimidation of any kind would not be tolerated. “No one is born hating another because of skin colour, religion, background or gender. People simply learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can also be taught to love,” the association wrote. The body emphasized that all DJs are equal and called for unity and mutual respect within the industry.
The incident has sparked widespread conversation across social media, with many users sharing the viral video showing DJ Tunez being beaten and kicked on the floor. Meanwhile, Wizkid, who is DJ Tunez’s official DJ, took to social media to blast Burna Boy for the assault, accusing him of attacking the DJ with a 10-man team. “Pussy nigga Jump a dj with 10 man carry diddy towel Dey dance. I never see a fool like this diddy babe for my life,” he wrote on X. Burna Boy has also been captured in a towel dance video mocking DJ Tunez, further fueling the online feud.
As of the time of this report, Burna Boy’s management has yet to issue an official statement regarding the alleged incident. The NDJ has confirmed that the temporary ban will remain in place until further notice, pending the outcome of its investigation.
