Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned the ongoing civilian suffering in Gaza as it voiced “deep concern” over Israel’s ongoing genocide in Palestine, all while reaffirming its long-standing call for a two-state solution.

Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, disclosed this during a meeting conducted by Sputnik Africa and alongside the Trade Commission of Russia to Nigeria, calling Israel’s military actions in Gaza “unacceptable.”

In his notable speech, Tuggar stated that “Our past experiences are precisely why we are very passionate about the situation in Gaza and Palestine,” considering that “Nigeria has been consistent in calling for a two-state solution.”

Both Palestine and Israel have a right to exist,” the Foreign Minister stated, adding, “We are completely against what is happening in Gaza today.”

Tuggar further stated that the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza “is something that every human being should stand up and oppose.”

It is noteworthy that Nigeria, as the most populous West African country, have been a part of the Committee of Nations heavily criticised and opposed Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. For example, Nigeria, alongside 119 United Nations member states, voted for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in October 2023.

Similarly, in September of 2024, Nigeria voted against Israel’s occupation of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). Tuggar, however, noted that Nigeria “do not agree with the arguments or counter-arguments that are put forward”, stating the ongoing genocide “did not start on October 7.”

There is no justification for the starvation of innocent human beings, for children losing their limbs, innocent children who have done nothing wrong,” he added.

According to Tuggar, Nigeria will continue to advocate for a solution, as the country is “deeply concerned about the expansion of the conflict in the Middle East region.”

While Tuggar concluded that “Escalating it or expanding it through preventive or preemptive strikes is not going to be the solution to this problem,” Nigeria has also condemned Israel’s attack on Qatar and other regions like Iran.
