The Government of Niger has announced a new initiative to expand and strengthen its healthcare infrastructure, with plans to construct 40 new health facilities in the southern regions of Zinder and Maradi.
Unveiled by the Minister of Public Health, this large-scale program includes the construction of five fully equipped district hospitals and thirty-five integrated health centres (Centres de Santé Intégrés – CSI). The announcement was made during a ministerial visit to the Dungass district hospital in Zinder, where a new pediatric unit was also officially inaugurated.
With an estimated budget of 30 billion CFA francs, the project is being carried out with the support of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). Authorities say the initiative aims to bring essential healthcare services closer to communities, particularly in underserved rural areas.
The new facilities are expected to address critical gaps in maternal and child healthcare, emergency services, and disease prevention, while also creating jobs and improving public health outcomes in the long term.
