A convoy of 40 fuel tankers from Niger arrived in Gao, northern Mali, this week under joint military escort, aiming to alleviate a fuel shortage that has disrupted daily life and energy supply in the region.
The operation, reported by Nigerien public broadcaster Télé Sahel on Thursday, was conducted as part of a security cooperation initiative between the armed forces of Niger and Mali. The Nigerien army escorted the convoy to the border town of Labbezanga, after which the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) continued the escort to Gao.
Colonel Ibrahim Samassa, commander of Mali’s first military region, commended the collaboration, stating that FAMa remains committed to securing supply routes for essential goods in the north.
“The FAMa are always ready to escort convoys to supply the northern regions with fuel and basic necessities,” he said.
This cooperation reflects the growing ties within the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS), a confederation formed in July 2024 by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso following their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The CSS aims to enhance regional security and economic integration among its member states.
