Niger Establishes Open-Heart Surgery Unit in Niamey Hospital in Collaboration with Burkina Faso

Niger has opened its first  open-heart surgery facility capable of carrying out the entire process domestically.

On April 28, 2025, Niger’s Minister of Health, Garba Hakimi, inaugurated the unit at the General Hospital of Niamey. This milestone was achieved with the assistance of surgical teams from Niger and Burkina Faso. The establishment of this surgical unit marks a pivotal step towards achieving health sovereignty for Niger.

By enabling the treatment of complex cardiac conditions within the country, it reduces the need for patients to seek medical care abroad, thereby alleviating financial and logistical burdens on families.

Hakimi emphasised the significance of this achievement, noting that it reflects the country’s commitment to improving its healthcare infrastructure and providing essential medical services to its citizens.
