NANS Cautions ASUU Over Opposing Student Loan Scheme

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has cautioned the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to stop opposing the student loan scheme instituted by the federal government.

Recall that ASUU had opposed the student loan scheme as a future burden on students after graduation in replacement for grants to be given to the youth who are university students.

Mr Lazarus Maigoro, the Zonal Coordinator for ASUU Bauchi State Branch, had earlier argued, “The fact that they will graduate with a loan of N4 million and above without the capacity to pay back will be another psychological torture for students.”

Meanwhile, the student body, NANS, through its Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, had counter-argued the academic body, stating that members of the group are in desperate need of loan facilities since it is intended to alleviate their financial responsibilities, which have been exacerbated by the current economic crisis for them and many other Nigerians.

According to a statement released by NANS, the loan scheme represents a ray of hope for many Nigerian students, especially those facing financial hardship.

“The scheme will offer opportunities for children from less privileged homes to access higher education, thereby leveling the playing field and fostering equal opportunities for all Nigerian youths,” it said.

In its warning letter, NANS urged ASUU to refrain from further opposing the loan scheme while stating that since the government student loan is interest-free, unlike commercial banks with interest rates, students should be able and allowed to obtain it.

NANS explained that it is disheartening that ASUU, which is purportedly dedicated to the welfare of students, is now opposing a programme that can provide much-needed relief to them.

“So, any attempt by ASUU to speak on behalf of students on this Student Loan Programme is unacceptable to us. ASUU should refrain from further opposing the loan scheme,” NANS reiterated.
