Miss Universe Nigeria has officially invited Chidimma Vanessa Onwe Adetshina to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 competition. This invitation comes in the wake of her controversial withdrawal from the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant, where she had successfully reached the top 11 finalists.
In a statement released via their official Instagram account, Miss Universe Nigeria acknowledged the challenges that led to Adetshina’s decision to step down from the Miss South Africa competition. “We at Miss Universe Nigeria have been closely following the developments regarding your decision to bow out of the Miss South Africa beauty pageant. We acknowledge the circumstances surrounding your withdrawal and understand the challenges you may be facing,” the statement read.
The organisation highlighted Adetshina’s Nigerian heritage and formally invited her to the upcoming Miss Universe Nigeria 2024. “As a Nigerian by heritage, we would like to formally invite you to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024. This is an opportunity to represent your father’s native land internationally,” the statement continued.
The invitation concluded with a call for Adetshina to consider the offer, presenting it as a chance to honour her roots and gain international recognition.
This development follows the recent controversy surrounding Adetshina’s exit from the Miss South Africa pageant. Born to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother in Soweto, South Africa, Adetshina received derogatory comments from many South Africans that she was unfit to run because she was a Nigerian. The investigation further stated that her mother may have committed identity theft. Adetshina eventually withdrew from the contest for her safety and well-being, as she specified on her Instagram account.
The situation also led to the Puebla International Literature Festival rescinding South Africa as the country in focus for this year’s event, further highlighting the international repercussions of the incident.
As of the time of this report, Adetshina is yet to release a statement on accepting the invitation from Miss Universe Nigeria.
