Minimum Wage: Leaked Memo Reveals SGF Requested N1b to Inaugurate Committee

A leaked memo circulating on social media has revealed that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, requested N1 billion from the Presidency for the inauguration of the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage.

The memo, dated January 18, 2024, with file number 58957/S.I/T6/419 was signed by the SGF who sought approval for the sum of N1.8 billion but was cut down to N1 billion for the inauguration of the committee.

The brief inauguration ceremony for the 37-man committee was held on Tuesday, 30th January, at the Executive Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja. It was presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu urged the Committee to be diligent and consult widely to arrive at a fair and decent wage that can alleviate the sufferings of the people.

According to AIT correspondent, the office of the SGF, through Segun Imohiosen, told journalists to step down the story and wait for clarification before going to press.

However, the leaked memo as made public by PIDOMNIGERIA, revealed that the committee has till April 2024 to conclude its assignment, and its recommendations will be drafted as a bill and sent to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.
