Malian President and Head of the Transition, Army General Assimi Goïta, has arrived in Moscow on Sunday for an official multi-day visit to the Russian Federation at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. The visit shows the deepening relationship between Mali and Russia, with both nations signalling their intent to reinforce bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including defence, security, and development.

Upon arrival, President Goïta was received with full honours, reflecting the importance Moscow places on its evolving partnership with Bamako. This visit is viewed as a critical milestone in Mali’s diplomatic reorientation and its broader engagement with the Sahel States Confederation.

As part of his official itinerary, Goïta participated in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, June 23, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a revered Russian war memorial located at the foot of the Kremlin, by the entrance to Alexander Garden. The monument commemorates soldiers who died in battle without being identified, particularly those who fell during World War II.

Accompanied by his Chief of Staff, the Malian Ambassador to Russia, the Russian Deputy Minister of Defence, and the Military Commander of Moscow, Goïta paid his respects in a ceremony that emphasised shared values of sacrifice, honour, and remembrance.
