The Malian government has announced the release of 600 million FCFA to repair and rehabilitate school infrastructure damaged by recent floods.

This decision was made during a meeting of the Interministerial Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management, held on Tuesday at the Prime Minister’s Office under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga.

The meeting, which aimed to assess the damage to the education sector, heard from the Minister of National Education, Amadou Sy Savané, who reported that several actions had already been initiated.

These included the identification and rehabilitation of affected schools. Savané also called on the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation to instruct regional governors to free up schools currently occupied.

In collaboration with international partners, UNICEF will provide tents and temporary shelters to serve as makeshift classrooms.

Minister Savané urged education academies to identify suitable locations for these temporary structures to ensure classes resume on November 4.

The committee also discussed the temporary relocation of students from the worst-affected schools to other facilities.

The government’s financial commitment as directed by the President of the Transition is seen as a move to swiftly respond to impact of the flood disaster.
