Mali has signed agreements with Russia toward economic transformation following a high-level meeting between Malian Minister of Economy and Finance, Alousséni Sanou, and Russian Minister of Energy, Sergey Tsivilev.
At the centre of discussions is the launch of a Mali-Russia intergovernmental commission, poised to unlock major benefits in key sectors, including gold mining, energy, and agriculture. This engagement marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between Bamako and Moscow.
According to officials, both nations are committed to developing effective solutions tailored to Mali’s priorities, laying the groundwork for a long-term partnership rooted in mutual gain. As Africa’s third-largest gold producer, Mali stands to benefit immensely from Russian expertise in mineral extraction and processing. Enhanced cooperation in this sector promises not only increased revenue for the state but also job creation and improved local development around mining zones.
New joint initiatives in the energy sector aim to boost Mali’s electricity production and stabilise supply costs. These projects are expected to improve access to reliable, affordable energy for households and businesses alike, a key driver of national growth and industrial expansion.
With food security high on the agenda, the partnership will also focus on modernising agricultural practices, increasing yields, and improving resilience in rural communities. The goal: a stronger, more self-sufficient food system that can feed Mali’s growing population.
The agreements extend beyond traditional sectors. Cooperation will also cover healthcare, digital transformation, and cybersecurity, ensuring that development efforts are sustainable and secure. A strong emphasis will be placed on education and training, particularly for Malian youth, equipping them with advanced skills and career opportunities in emerging industries.
The first official session of the new intergovernmental commission, to be chaired by Sergey Tsivilev on the Russian side, is set to begin soon. Recall that on Monday, Malian President and Head of the Transition, Army General Assimi Goïta, was officially received at the Kremlin by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The high-level meeting, which included a private tête-à-tête between the two leaders and an expanded session with their respective delegations, set the stage for signing several cooperation agreements.
