The Borno State Police Command has declared a 24-hour curfew in Maiduguri following protests that erupted over the worsening economic situation in Nigeria. This decision was announced by ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the police spokesman, who stated that the curfew is necessary to restore law and order in the state.
The curfew comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Kawori, where an improvised explosive device detonated, killing 16 people and injuring many others. The government has cited this incident as a reason for the curfew, but citizens argue that it may be a tactic to stifle the voice of protesters.
Protests began in Maiduguri as part of nationwide #EndBadGovernance demonstrations on August 1, where citizens expressed anger over rising living costs and economic challenges. The situation escalated when security forces reportedly opened fire on protesters, resulting in at least one fatality. A correspondent reporting live from the scene confirmed hearing gunshots and witnessing a protester being shot.
The Borno State government has urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding during the curfew, but many are sceptical that the curfew may be more about suppressing dissent than ensuring safety.
