The Lagos State Government has decided to close several markets in response to recent fire outbreaks in the state’s central area.

Following a fire that destroyed four buildings in Dosumu Idumota Street in Lagos Island, Mrs Bola Olumegbon Lawal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Distress, announced the indefinite suspension of commercial activities in the affected markets. She made this known to the local traders during an on-site calamity assessment.

The outbreak occurred around noon on Tuesday, destroying four buildings and partially damaging several others. Mrs Lawal emphasised the need to prevent loss of life and maintain peace and order in the area and urged market traders to cooperate with emergency responders.

Margaret Adeseye, director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, reported that 14 buildings were affected, with two structures completely collapsed and two others partially compromised.

She said: “Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully contained a major fire incident affecting 14 buildings, with two structures fully collapsed and two partially collapsed,” the statement reads.

“The cause was traced to refuelling a generator among others, with fuel storage in kegs at the penthouse of a three-building complex housing a printing shop with chemical contents.

“Swift firefighting operations by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service which has now moved to damping down strategy, mitigating all threats and ensuring public safety. Enumeration of shops and goods lost are ongoing, and preventive measures will be enforced.”

Recounting the ordeal, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osayintolu, affirmed that no casualties were recorded. Still, market activities were suspended as a preventive measure.

“No casualties, nor injuries were recorded at the incident scene, however, while putting out the fire, an adult female collapsed and was promptly attended by Paramedics from the LRU Pre-Hospital Care Unit at the incident scene, before being moved swiftly to Marina General Hospital for continued medical care,” Oke-Osayintolu explained.

The affected areas include Dosumu, Nnamdi Azikwe, Moshalashi, Woro Pedro, and Obanikoro Streets. Others include: Ago Tawa, Idumagbo Avenue, Idumagbo, Ido – Oluwo and Oju Olobun Streets.
