Lagos Airport in Shambles Despite Billions Spent on Renovations — Broken AC, Filthy Washrooms Remain While Kotoka Stands 10 Years Ahead

Despite the government spending ₦712 billion on renovations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, the facility is in a shocking state of decay. A viral social media video on X exposes broken air conditioners, filthy washrooms, and the total absence of WiFi, while passengers endure discomfort, delays, and a chaotic travel experience.

The video highlights the government’s failure to deliver even the basic standards expected at an international airport. The passenger compares MMIA with Accra’s Kotoka International Airport, calling Kotoka “10 years ahead” in terms of modern facilities and service. This comparison highlights how the Nigerian government has wasted substantial sums while travellers have suffered.

Continued operational disruptions compound the airport’s problems. Earlier in 2025, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) closed a runway for emergency repairs, a clear indication that essential infrastructure had been neglected even before the renovations began. Meanwhile, the ₦712 billion spent on Terminal One upgrades has not prevented MMIA from looking worse than a graveyard, demonstrating the government’s incompetence in managing public funds and delivering functional infrastructure.

This expenditure is not just a mismanagement of funds; it is an insult to Nigerians who endure everyday hardships. Billions have been poured into a project that fails to provide comfort, efficiency, or safety, while neighbouring countries like Ghana operate airports that put Nigeria’s flagship international airport to shame.

The government has turned the renovation into a vanity project. MMIA stands as a testament to the administration’s inability to execute even a simple infrastructure upgrade effectively. Nigerians continue to pay the price for leadership that spends recklessly while delivering nothing of value.
