Billy Simani, a Kenyan digital influencer/protester, was released yesterday evening following an alleged abduction earlier in the day by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

His release, around 10:00 PM, was facilitated by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), whose timely intervention played a crucial role.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo, who was present at the time of Simani’s release, attributed the successful rescue to a valuable tip-off.

Despite the joyous reunion, details about Simani’s detention, including the reasons for his arrest and his location during the abduction, remained shrouded in mystery.

Simani vanished on Friday after reportedly being apprehended at his residence. His sudden disappearance prompted widespread concern among his friends and followers, who were unable to locate him over the weekend.

The anxiety culminated in the involvement of the LSK, which dispatched representatives to investigate his whereabouts.

A video shared by Faith Odhiambo captured the moment after Simani’s release.

In the footage, she addressed the public, confirming the rescue while expressing relief at Simani’s safety.

“Hello, everyone. I want to confirm that we have been able to rescue Billy. He is now safe and sound. I know we got a notification earlier, and so did LSK; we had thought that Billy had been freed, but when we sent someone to the station, we found that Billy was not there and had not been released. The moment we got a tip-off, we ran immediately to try to find Billy,” Odhiambo said.

Simani, visibly relieved, also spoke in the video, expressing his gratitude. “I’m safe. Thanks to everyone. Thanks to LSK for coming to the rescue. We thank God,” he stated.

The circumstances of Simani’s abduction and detention raised serious questions about the actions of the DCI and the protection of individual rights in Kenya.
