ICYMI: Residence of Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria Burgled in Nigeria’s Federal Capital

The official residence of Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria, located in the high-security Maitama district of Abuja, was burgled in the early hours of Thursday, July 11, by unknown intruders who carted away valuables, including television sets, gas cylinders, and bags of rice.

According to reports, the local staff at the residence noted that the burglars gained entry by cutting through the protective wire on top of the perimeter fence. Once inside the compound, they broke open the back door to access the interior of the diplomatic property.

A domestic staff member at the residence recounted the events leading up to the discovery of the burglary.

Around 2 am that day, there was a power cut, so I went to the back to switch on the generator. About 10 minutes later, electricity was restored, so I turned it off again, the staff member explained.

“By 5 am, I was making my rounds and noticed one of the windows had been tampered with. A burglary-proof rod had been removed. I also found the back door open and saw that the wire fence had been cut. That’s when I called the police officer on duty from his room,” the staff added.

The burglars reportedly stole two plasma television sets, two gas cylinders, and two bags of rice. When reporters visited the residence on Saturday, the section of the fence breached by the intruders had been cordoned off with police crime scene tape.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety and security of diplomatic residences in Abuja, particularly in high-profile areas such as Maitama, which is home to several foreign missions and diplomatic officials.

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the incident, describing it as a “burglary issue,” and assured that law enforcement authorities are actively investigating the matter.

Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa told reporters, “It was a burglary issue that happened last week. The police have started investigations.” Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, also confirmed the ongoing investigation and disclosed that the Commissioner of Police had personally visited the crime scene as part of the inquiry.

It will be recalled that it was recently reported that Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sam Ablakwa debunked viral claims that an “Igbo Kingdom” is being established in Ghana, clarifying that the individual at the centre of the controversy, Mr Chukwudi Ihenetu, has long since abandoned any such intentions and has issued an unreserved apology to the people and leadership of Ghana.

The Minister addressed the growing public concern that followed the circulation of the viral video in which Mr Ihenetu, a Nigerian national, was purported to be laying the foundations of an “Igbo Kingdom” in Ghana.
