Haitian police have arrested two Nigerians on Sunday for operating with fake Haitian National Identification Cards.

The suspects, identified as Madukanze Kenneth, 31, and Henry Peter, 29, were arrested in Jacmel, Haiti.

Kenneth was caught with an ID card bearing the name “Augustin Jerry,” while Peter’s ID card bore the name “Junior Jean Pierre.”

The South East Police Department in Haiti announced the arrests on social media, stating their commitment to continue working “tirelessly” to apprehend individuals who attempt to break the law and disrupt public order.

Haiti is currently grappling with widespread gang violence and clashes between gangs and the police. Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, gangs have taken control of significant parts of the country; about 80 per cent of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is under gang control, according to the Associated Press.

On Monday, Haitian police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of peaceful protesters who were demonstrating, demanding that the government tackle the gang violence issue in the country.
