The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that inmates across Ghana’s prisons will play a significant role in supporting national education and gender equity initiatives by producing essential school supplies.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, the Minister revealed that the Ghana Prisons Service will be responsible for producing up to 20 per cent of sanitary pads distributed under the Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Programme, a key initiative launched by President John Mahama earlier this year.

Minister for the Interior announces at Government Accountability Series that up to 20 per cent of sanitary pads distributed under the Free Sanitary Pad initiative will be produced in Ghana’s prisons. They will also produce 30 per cent of school desks and school uniforms,” the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu noted.

The Communication Minister also highlighted the announcement, stating that the initiative will reduce costs, support self-reliance in public service delivery, and offer inmates productive work that aids their reintegration into society after incarceration.
