Ghana has signed a deal with a United States company to build its first nuclear power plant using NuScale Power’s small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

The U.S. State Department announced this on Thursday.

The deal was finalised at the U.S.-Africa nuclear energy summit in Nairobi, Kenya. The agreement involves Nuclear Power Ghana and Regnum Technology Group deploying a NuScale VOYGR-12 SMR, Reuters reported.

SMR is a type of nuclear reactor that is smaller in size and power output and more easily constructed than traditional nuclear reactors.

Ghana aims to use nuclear power to attain its industrial goals while combating climate change. For the SMR project, scheduled for 10 years, Ghana chose NuScale over other contenders like France’s EDF, China National Nuclear Corporation, South Korea’s Kepco, and Russia’s ROSATOM.
