Ghana Begins Boundary Pillar Project Along Côte d’Ivoire Border

233

Ghana has announced plans to begin construction of boundary pillars along its border with Côte d’Ivoire, a move aimed at strengthening border demarcation and preventing disputes between the two neighbouring countries.

Officials say the project is part of a broader effort to define national boundaries and improve security in border communities clearly. The construction of physical markers is expected to help reduce misunderstandings over land ownership and territorial limits.

Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire share a long border that passes through several rural and farming communities. In some areas, unclear boundaries have occasionally led to disputes over farmland, natural resources, and settlement rights.

Authorities believe that properly marked borders will not only reduce tensions but also improve coordination on security and development projects. Clear boundaries can help both countries manage cross-border trade, migration, and infrastructure planning more effectively.

The project follows years of cooperation between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire on boundary issues, including maritime disputes that were eventually resolved through international arbitration.

Officials say the new boundary pillars will be placed at key points along the land border, with teams from both countries working together to ensure accuracy and mutual agreement.

Local leaders in border communities have welcomed the initiative, saying it could bring more stability to areas where people often live and farm across loosely defined lines.

The project is also seen as part of a wider push across West Africa to improve border management and reduce conflicts stemming from unclear territorial boundaries.

By clearly demarcating its border with Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana hopes to prevent future disputes and strengthen cooperation with one of its most important neighbours.
