Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have come to an end after FIFA confirmed the Democratic Republic of Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation playoff tournament.
The announcement followed months of uncertainty after the Nigeria Football Federation filed a protest challenging the outcome of the African playoff match between Nigeria and DR Congo.
The match had ended 1–1 before DR Congo won on penalties, securing the ticket to represent Africa in the playoff tournament. Nigeria attempted to overturn the result, claiming DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive encounter.
FIFA’s final decision confirmed DR Congo as the legitimate qualifier and included them in the six-team playoff tournament that will determine the final two spots for the 2026 World Cup.

The teams scheduled to compete in the playoff tournament include Bolivia, Iraq, Jamaica, Suriname, New Caledonia, and DR Congo.
The tournament will begin in March and will determine the final qualifiers for the World Cup which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
For Nigeria, the decision closes the door on any remaining path to the tournament, ending what many fans had hoped would be a late revival for the Super Eagles.
